Distraction Camp Free Theatre Christchurch invites you to a House of Illusions. Inside, live music is performed by a pianist and cellist as actors tango together. Between dances and songs, the actors move to dressing areas at the edge of the stage, and prepare for a series of performances, given for the audience and for each other. A bishop hears the confession of a young penitent, and gives penance. A judge hears the testimony of a thief, who is consequently punished by an ominous masked figure. A camp commandant trains his “horse” – a young woman who must be disciplined and put through her paces. A woman sings soulfully in remembrance of times past. The thief sings for the camp commandant, and in reward is given the head of her torturer in a box… This is Distraction Camp, the acclaimed follow-up production to Free Theatre Christchurch’s award-winning Faust Chroma (Montana Award Nominee for Most Original Production at the 2009 Chapman Tripp Awards). Directed by Peter Falkenberg, Distraction Camp pays homage to Hamlet, The Balcony, films such as The Night Porter, The Tango Lesson and Frida, and the sentimentality and brutality of Argentine tango. “Distraction Camp, Free Theatre's latest production, has at its heart a delicious contradiction whereby sensuous, bizarre, exotic and theatrical images uncover an arid, soulless world.” - Alan Scott The Press, December 2009. “Unlike any other show you’ll see this year” - Steph Walker, Programme Manager, BATS

Doors. Walls. And also Silence. A mystery of madness, Wellington and just how far one really bad day will take you. Emma and Lydia have a problem. They live together. That doesn't mean they like each other. A stain has appeared on their wall and it seems to be growing. It could be rust. But it's not. Claire has a problem. Her boyfriend, Mark, is up to something - and it's not planning to propose. The customers at her chiropractor practice keep complaining of chest pain and she just can't work out why. Tim has a problem. People are going missing and no one seems to remember them. Or care. In world where everyone is looking for something, you'll be shocked at what they find. Behind all these doors, through all these mirrors, someone is waiting. You will tell the world that you’re not crazy. It won’t listen. 'DOORS. WALLS. AND ALSO SILENCE.' is the latest devised theatre work from my accomplice - the people who brought you the 2010 Fringe Award nominated 'Sometimes I Don’t Like Yellow'. Cast:

The Gruffalo Come along to the Opera House on 4 September 2010 and see The Gruffalo for the first time on stage in New Zealand. The West End production of the monster hit children’s tale The Gruffalo comes to Wellington for a very limited season in September, at the Opera House on Saturday 4 September for three shows only. The Gruffalo is the magical musical adaption of the award winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, published by Macmillan Children’s Books. The Gruffalo follows Mouse into the deep dark wood on a lunchtime hunt for hazelnuts. Armed with just a nut map and a very vivid imagination, Mouse runs into the smirking, wheeler-dealer Fox; an eccentric, retired Woodland Air Force General Owl; and the maraca-shaking, party animal Snake. Rather than becoming the main course of their next meal, Mouse kills their appetites with stories of an imaginary monster friend. Little does this clever critter know but Mouse will have to escape the jaws of this faux protector as well. Whether their favourite food is roasted fox, owl ice cream, scrambled snake or Gruffalo crumble, audiences eat up this delectable tale about the adventures of a clever little mouse in a forest full of predators. Join Mouse on an adventurous journey through the deep, dark wood in this big scary monster of a show. Mouse can scare hungry animals away with tall stories of the terrifying Gruffalo, but what happens when she comes face to face with the very creature she imagined? Let your imagination run wild with songs, laughs and fun for children aged 3 and up, and their adults. London’s Tall Stories Theatre Company have toured in Britain, Europe, America and beyond with this transformation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved story and the show has been an even bigger hit in Australia, with sold-out seasons and a prestigious 2009 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Production for Children. In a production that has become the toast of London’s West End, Tall Stories vibrantly reinvents this delightful tale through its signature style of bold, multifaceted storytelling. This triumphant trio of performers fill the forest with colourful characters and toe tapping, sing-along songs capturing the magic of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s adored modern classic. “... clever storytelling... enchanting characterisation... a rare treat that really is for all the family.” - The Scotsman “The cast of three bring the story to wonderful life ... an irresistibly charming tale told with refreshing simplicity” – The Times (London) "funny, charming and smart... brings the house down" – Sydney Morning Herald
Opensouls Sixsixteen and Smash Boom Pow are proud to present the return of Opensouls to Bodega on 4 September. Since their musical journey began in 2001, Opensouls have been busy winning over music lovers with their fresh, infectious energy. Infused with elements of soul and old-school R'n'B, the band’s unique sound is due to a collaborative effort from its seven talented members, each bringing their own personality, flair and musical taste to the mix. 2009 saw the release of 'Standing in the Rain' Opensouls’ terrifically accomplished sophomore album that well and truly solidified their standing as the top-shelf New Zealand soul band. Heralded for lighting up the stage with their irrepressible energy, they are crowd pleasers at music festivals and gigs on both sides of the Tasman. Bringing soul to the music scene, this powerful collective of talented musicians are setting the bar for world-class New Zealand music. Supporting will be the freshest new collective in town. The Buttercuts are quickly making a name for themselves as one of Wellington's most exciting live acts with their fusion live keys, guitars, MPC and beats providing the phat as funk sound bed for J-Dub's (Truetone Recordings) dexterous, insightful raps. Mara And The Bushkas will also be taking the stage to deliver their eclectic fusion of folk, rock, soul, pop. Following the Opensouls, two incredibly talented producers Julien Dyne and Benny Tones will hit the wheels of steel to spin tunes from their highly acclaimed debut albums' 'Pins and Digits' and 'Chrysalis' respectively. Opensouls w/ DJ support from Julien Dyne Drinks specials available. Formed in 2002, Opensouls have steadily risen through the ranks of the New Zealand music scene since beginning their combined musical journey in 2001. Comprised of 2 vocalists, M.C. Bjorn Petersen and singer Tyra Hammond, and a live band including Jeremy Toy a.k.a. Ota (guitar/MPC), Julien Dyne (drums), Chip Mathews (bass), Steph Brown (keys), Scott Towers (saxophone), Isaac Aesili (trumpet/vocals) and Harlin Davey a.k.a. DJ Buttafingers (turntables), the collective possesses an abundance of musical flair and experience which they used to great effect on their critically acclaimed debut album Kaleidoscope. Add to this a string of sold out 12" and 7" vinyl releases and an inspired live show, and it's clear to see why Opensouls are now widely regarded one of Aotearoa's premier groups. Standing In The Rain is Opensouls' terrifically accomplished sophomore album and well and truly solidifies their standing as a top-shelf NZ soul band. Standing In The Rain is a concept album, made with the intent to reflect the sound and feeling of a musical era; late-50s, early-60s British and American R&B. Inspiration was drawn from traditional songwriters such as Lennon and McCartney, Smokey Robinson, Holland/Dozier/Holland and Van Morrison. Consequently, the album has an unmistakable vintage quality, reminiscent of Motown in its heyday. Opensouls' aim was to create an album that involved the entire band performing 100% of the time. Unlike their 2006 debut, Kaleidoscope, with drum programming and computer sequencing, Standing In The Rain was tracked entirely live by the band's rhythm section and recorded at Jeremy's Spare Room studio at his home in the AK suburb of Westmere. The band didn't want a polished, expensive studio sound – after studying how old soul records were made, they used basic recording gear, pushing it to its full potential, obtaining a raw, gritty quality.
